What Are Painting Techniques?
Painting techniques are the methods artists use to prepare a surface, apply and manipulate paint, construct layers, create marks and control visual effects such as texture, colour, light and depth.
Techniques include glazing, impasto, wet-on-wet painting, underpainting, scumbling, dry brush, sfumato, stippling and Pointillism. Artists rarely depend on only one method: a single painting may combine thin layers, opaque passages, blending, visible marks and heavily textured highlights.
