Two Different Van Gogh Starry Nights

Starry Night over the Rhône belongs to his Arles period. It shows city lights reflected across the Rhône beneath stars, with a couple visible in the foreground. The Starry Night belongs to his later Saint-Rémy period and combines observation with imagination in a dramatically swirling sky above a village and cypress tree.
Piece One: Starry Night over the Rhône
Van Gogh painted the Rhône composition in September 1888 after becoming increasingly fascinated with the challenge of representing night through colour rather than simply using black.
Blue dominates the river and sky, while warm city lights create reflections across the water. Stars appear as concentrated points of light, and the human couple adds an intimate element to the otherwise expansive river scene.
The Musée d’Orsay records the historic painting at approximately 73 × 92 cm.
Piece Two: The Starry Night
Van Gogh painted The Starry Night at Saint-Rémy in June 1889. The composition was inspired in part by the landscape visible from Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, but MoMA emphasizes that Van Gogh also altered and invented important elements.
A towering cypress occupies the left foreground. Below the turbulent sky lies a quiet village, while the stars and moon are surrounded by broad radiating forms.
