Self Portrait With Hat Painting of Van Gogh

Self Portrait With Hat Painting of Vincent van Gogh is matched here to the Van Gogh Museum’s celebrated Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat, painted in Paris in September–October 1887. Van Gogh used short strokes travelling in different directions and striking complementary colour combinations to build his face, hat and surrounding background. The resulting halo-like pattern around his head makes this one of his most recognizable Paris self-portraits. Catalogued as F 344 / JH 1353, the historic oil-on-canvas painting measures approximately 44 × 37.5 cm and belongs to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

About Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat

By late 1887 Van Gogh had been living in Paris for nearly two years. During that time his painting changed profoundly.

He had studied Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist art, experimented with divided colour and produced numerous self-portraits as exercises in figure painting.

Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat brings many of these experiments together in one highly organized image.

The Halo of Brushstrokes

The Van Gogh Museum highlights the distinctive way short marks travel in different directions through the painting. Around Van Gogh’s head and hat, they create an almost circular, halo-like field.

This does not represent a literal halo. It is a visual consequence of the directional brushwork and colour structure surrounding the figure.

The device separates his face from the background while making the entire painting feel active.

Complementary Colour

The portrait is also one of Van Gogh’s bold Paris-period colour experiments. Blue and orange, and red and green, are placed in close relationship so that neighbouring colours strengthen one another.

Some original pigments have changed with age. The Van Gogh Museum notes that fading red pigment altered parts of the picture, meaning some colour contrasts are less strong today than Van Gogh originally intended.

From Pointillism to Van Gogh’s Own Brushwork

Van Gogh studied the dotted technique of contemporary Pointillist painters but did not adopt it mechanically.

Instead of consistent dots, he increasingly used short stripes and strokes oriented according to the form being described. Facial hair, skin, hat and background receive different patterns.

This flexibility became part of the highly personal brushwork for which his later paintings are famous.
