Van Gogh rented rooms on the right-hand side of the yellow building at Place Lamartine in Arles beginning in May 1888. The rooms with green shutters formed his living quarters, with his bedroom located toward the rear.

The house represented much more to Van Gogh than simple accommodation. He wanted it to become a base for artists working together in southern France. His friend Paul Gauguin eventually joined him there later in 1888.
