Wheatfield under thunderclouds By Vincent Van Gogh

Wheatfield under Thunderclouds by Vincent van Gogh is one of the extraordinary panoramic landscapes created during his final weeks at Auvers-sur-Oise in July 1890. An immense field stretches beneath an unusually broad, turbulent sky, using Van Gogh’s new double-square canvas format to create a powerful sense of openness. Catalogued as F 778 / JH 2097, the historic oil-on-canvas painting measures approximately 50.4 × 101.3 cm and belongs to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Alpha Art Gallery offers reproductions as canvas prints, fine art prints, framed prints and 100% hand-painted oil paintings.

A Panoramic Van Gogh Landscape

The proportions are immediately distinctive. At roughly twice as wide as it is high, Wheatfield under Thunderclouds belongs to the elongated “double-square” landscapes Van Gogh explored at Auvers.

This format lets the wheatfield and sky extend dramatically across the viewer’s field of vision. It also makes the composition particularly suited to wide walls above sofas, beds, sideboards and long desks.

Wheatfields Under Turbulent Skies

Van Gogh wrote to Theo about large canvases depicting immense wheatfields beneath troubled skies. He said he had deliberately tried to communicate sadness and extreme loneliness.

Importantly, the same letter also expresses a more positive feeling toward the countryside. Van Gogh believed these paintings could communicate what he found healthy and reassuring in rural nature. Reducing the painting to a simple symbol of despair therefore misses part of his own documented explanation.

What Does the Painting Show?

The landscape is stripped of buildings and prominent human figures. Wheat and other cultivated fields fill the lower section while the heavy sky dominates above.

The low horizon strengthens the contrast between land and atmosphere. Instead of a picturesque village scene, the viewer encounters broad areas of countryside and weather.

Van Gogh’s Final Auvers Experiments

During his short stay at Auvers, Van Gogh remained extraordinarily productive. He explored village streets, cottages, portraits, gardens and wide landscapes while changing canvas proportions and brushwork.

The double-square format of Wheatfield under Thunderclouds allowed him to create an unusually expansive field of vision. The countryside appears to continue beyond both side edges of the painting.
