Road with Cypress and Star by Vincent van Gogh is a dramatic night landscape painted at Saint-Rémy in May 1890, shortly before Van Gogh left Provence for Auvers-sur-Oise. Van Gogh painted Road with Cypress and Star around 12–15 May 1890, at the end of his stay at Saint-Rémy.
After moving to Auvers, he described the work to fellow artist Paul Gauguin as a final attempt at a Provençal night subject.
Van Gogh’s Own Description
Van Gogh described a night sky containing a slender crescent moon and a single star of deliberately exaggerated brilliance. Below, he mentioned a road bordered by tall yellow canes, distant blue mountains, an old inn with lit windows and a very tall dark cypress.
He also specifically described a cart with a horse and two late travellers on the road. These details make his correspondence especially valuable for interpreting the image without relying on speculative symbolism.
The Cypress Divides the Composition
The tall tree rises through almost the entire height of the portrait-format canvas and visually divides the moon from the bright celestial object on the opposite side.
Van Gogh had become fascinated by cypresses during Saint-Rémy, repeatedly painting their dark flame-like silhouettes against landscapes and skies.
Night Without Blackness
