Mulberry Tree by Van Gogh
The Mulberry Tree by Vincent van Gogh is one of the most energetic landscapes of his Saint-Rémy period. Painted in October 1889, it shows a mulberry tree bursting across a rocky hillside beneath an intensely animated sky. Van Gogh described its foliage as brilliantly yellow against blue, and he built parts of the tree with unusually thick paint. Catalogued as F 637 / JH 1796, the historic oil-on-canvas painting measures 54 × 65 cm and belongs to the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. Alpha Art Gallery offers canvas, fine art, framed and 100% hand-painted oil reproductions.
About The Mulberry Tree
Van Gogh painted The Mulberry Tree while living at Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The surrounding countryside provided olive groves, cypress trees, mountains and individual trees that could become complete subjects in themselves.
The Norton Simon Museum dates the painting to October 1889. Van Gogh was particularly satisfied with the work and mentioned the mulberry tree repeatedly in correspondence with family members.
A Tree That Seems to Explode With Energy
The mulberry’s dense crown spreads vigorously outward rather than forming a calm symmetrical canopy. Curling marks create clusters of foliage that appear to move in several directions at once.
The ground, tree and sky all participate in this motion. Instead of isolating the tree against a passive background, Van Gogh lets directional marks connect every part of the composition.
Extraordinarily Thick Paint
The Norton Simon Museum describes the surface as so richly worked that it approaches relief sculpture. Van Gogh used thick chrome-yellow paint in the leaves and manipulated it not only with normal brushwork but also with the handle of his brush.
This physical surface is central to the painting’s identity. A print can reproduce the visual appearance of Van Gogh’s impasto, while a 100% hand-painted oil reproduction adds genuine physical paint texture to the new artwork.
Contrasting Colour
The tree’s warm foliage stands dramatically against the cooler sky. Van Gogh’s letters specifically emphasize this contrast, showing that the colour relationship was intentional rather than incidental.
Similar complementary tensions appear throughout his mature work. He often strengthened one colour by placing it beside another capable of intensifying it visually.
Why The Mulberry Tree Matters
The painting demonstrates how Van Gogh could transform a single ordinary tree into a complete expressive landscape. Shape, line, colour and paint thickness all contribute to its vitality.
The fellow painter Camille Pissarro admired the work soon after Van Gogh’s death and became an early owner, further demonstrating the strong response the painting produced among artists familiar with modern painting.
