Fishing in Spring By Vincent Van Gogh

Fishing in Spring by Vincent van Gogh corresponds to Fishing in Spring, the Pont de Clichy (Asnières), painted in 1887 during Van Gogh’s Paris period. The view shows the River Seine near the Clichy Bridge, where fishermen, small boats, water, trees and the broad bridge are unified through short strokes of brilliant colour. The historical oil-on-canvas painting measures approximately 50.5 × 60 cm and belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago. Alpha Art Gallery offers canvas prints, fine art prints, framed prints and 100% hand-painted oil reproductions.

Van Gogh Along the Seine

In 1887 Van Gogh repeatedly travelled to suburbs north-west of central Paris, including Asnières and Clichy. The riverside environment offered bridges, factories, boats, fishermen and spring vegetation.

He sometimes painted in the area with Paul Signac, whose modern colour technique strongly influenced him.

Divisionism and Brilliant Colour

The Art Institute of Chicago explains that Van Gogh absorbed ideas from Signac and Georges Seurat. Instead of blending every colour smoothly, he used small strokes of relatively pure colour so adjacent marks could interact visually.

Van Gogh never became a strict Neo-Impressionist, but these experiments helped him move toward the bright colour and energetic brushwork of his later work.

What Does Fishing in Spring Depict?

The River Seine occupies the centre of the composition, with fishing activity and boats beneath the sweeping form of the Pont de Clichy. Spring foliage frames the water while light reflects across the different surfaces.

The industrial bridge and recreational fishing coexist within the same modern suburban landscape.
