Vase with cornflowers and poppies, peonies and chrysanthemums By Vincent Van Gogh
Vase with Cornflowers and Poppies, Peonies and Chrysanthemums by Vincent van Gogh is the work now titled Still Life with Meadow Flowers and Roses by the Kröller-Müller Museum. Van Gogh painted the monumental floral still life in 1886–87, using an unusually large canvas measuring approximately 100 × 80 cm. Catalogued as F 278 / JH 1103, the painting later became the subject of important technical research after doubts were raised about its attribution. Alpha Art Gallery offers reproductions as canvas prints, fine art prints, framed prints and 100% hand-painted oil paintings.
Important Title Update
The older descriptive title lists cornflowers, poppies, peonies and chrysanthemums. The Kröller-Müller Museum now presents the artwork as Still Life with Meadow Flowers and Roses.
Both titles point to the same F 278 painting. Using the current museum title within the description strengthens entity accuracy while preserving your existing commercial product title.
A Remarkably Large Flower Still Life
At approximately one metre high, this painting is much larger than many of Van Gogh’s Paris flower studies. The dense bouquet fills much of the vertical composition and gives the work considerable presence when reproduced at substantial size.
The abundance of flowers initially contributed to questions about the attribution because the painting seemed unusual within Van Gogh’s known development.
The Hidden Wrestlers Beneath the Flowers
X-ray investigation revealed an earlier composition underneath the floral still life: two wrestlers. Van Gogh had written in January 1886 about painting two nude torsos of wrestlers while studying in Antwerp.
Further technical research undertaken by an international team, including specialists from the Van Gogh Museum and Kröller-Müller Museum, helped confirm that the underlying work and the flower still life belong to Van Gogh. The museum publicly rehabilitated the painting after this research.
A Canvas Reused by Van Gogh
The discovery also illustrates Van Gogh’s practical approach to materials. Reusing a large canvas enabled him to transform an earlier academic figure exercise into a radically different flower painting.
That layered physical history is invisible in an ordinary reproduction but makes the historical object particularly significant within Van Gogh scholarship.
