Still Life with Fruit and Chestnuts By Vincent Van Gogh
Still Life with Fruit and Chestnuts by Vincent van Gogh is a compact Paris still life painted in autumn 1886. Two pears and an apple rest among scattered chestnuts, giving Van Gogh a simple arrangement through which to study shape, light, texture and changing colour. The historical oil-on-canvas work measures approximately 27 × 35.6 cm and belongs to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Long questioned as a Van Gogh, the painting was re-examined and accepted as authentic by specialists at the Van Gogh Museum in 2019. Alpha Art Gallery offers reproductions as canvas prints, fine art prints, framed prints and 100% hand-painted oil paintings.
About Still Life with Fruit and Chestnuts
Van Gogh created this small still life while living in Paris, where his painting was changing rapidly. Exposure to Impressionism and other modern French art encouraged him to move away from the predominantly dark earth colours associated with many of his earlier Dutch works.
The arrangement itself is deliberately modest. Pears, an apple and chestnuts occupy a shallow surface without an elaborate decorative setting. Their different sizes and textures allowed Van Gogh to practise modelling ordinary objects through paint.
Important Subject Correction
The old product tags included flowers and sunflowers, but neither is an accurate subject for this artwork. This is a fruit still life centred on pears, an apple and chestnuts.
Removing unrelated floral tags makes the product easier to classify correctly alongside Van Gogh’s other food and fruit still lifes.
An Artwork Rediscovered Through Research
The attribution of this painting has an unusual history. For many years it was doubted and was not included in the standard Van Gogh catalogues raisonnés. Research later undertaken with specialists at the Van Gogh Museum supported its attribution to Van Gogh and dated it to autumn 1886 in Paris.
Technical investigation also helped establish that the canvas had been reused, a practice Van Gogh employed repeatedly when materials were limited.
Fruit as a Painting Exercise
Still-life subjects gave Van Gogh tremendous freedom. Fruit did not move, require a paid model or depend on changing outdoor weather. He could arrange objects himself and concentrate on colour, surface and volume.
The rounded pears and apple create softer forms, while the smaller chestnuts produce irregular accents around them. From a distance, the painting reads as a unified arrangement; viewed closely, individual brush marks become more apparent.
